Alpacas on the farm in Chile
SACOYO Alpacas, South Africa

New Roads, new Horizons... One says every seven years one changes, skin, hair, thoughts... Nothing stays the same, especially when you are keen to explore the world and soak in different shades of life. We, that is Carmen and Udo Mettendorf, started our first journey some 20 years ago in a exploring Africa from top to toe, then the skies in a Hot-Air Balloon with our company Wineland Ballooning and after all a bit more settled bringing our South African home: PAARL-ROCK SUITES from shambles to new glory. Somehow our journey should not end here, so Udo discovers Alpacas. The Soul-animals. They touch you with their friendliness, oozing charme and style with their big eyes and calm vibes.
Boys Galore, there must be a girl around

Full of new enthusiasm we hurried into ordering our first Alpacas from the, at the time, only importer. No clue about microns, crimp nor conformation. Waking up with new responsibilities Alpacas are not only the dream of a great investment, no, they are wonderful living creatures: individual personalities with needs and requirements, too.
When our first animals finally arrived in South Africa and we touched and looked at them, we were a little disappointed with their conformation and their fibre quality.
Did we make the right decision? Had the SA Importer taken advantage of us? Why did we not get any answers for our questions?
We knew that these animals had been choosen directly from the semi-free, mixed herds of alpacas and lamas who are kept by the indigenous indios living on the Altiplano in Chile. On this up to 5000 meter high plateau with very little oxygen in the air selecting alpacas without expert assistance and help from a veterinarian is an extremely difficult task and it would be naive to think that one can do that out of hand.
Young alpaca girlTo learn more about alpacas we did some research in Germany, visited farms and shows. And quickly we realized, that there are better quality animals available, if experts select them.
One cannot collect all information off books, so hands-on experience was needed. And that is when
Maria Bravo from Quintessence Alpacas came into our lives. Some weeks of training on her farm Llay Llay in Chile - only then we realized what the alpaca-future would have in store for us. To be a successful Alpaca breeder, like in any other trade, we had to listen and learn, best teacher Maria: dedication, relentless determination to achieve perfectionism, no compromise when it comes to well-being and quality of the Alpacas she is never tired in sharing invaluable information and advice with all of her customers . Alpaca girl

Alpaca girlThat was the time when we decided to do not only breeding but also importing of Premium Quality Quintessence Alpacas ourselves. And in contrast to our first own experience: We also want to transfer our knowledge and Know-How so that whoever buys alpacas from us gets a headstart - not only to begin with superior animals right from day one but also with a much steeper success curve.

Put into practice this also makes good business sense: you can sell better quality alpaca offspring much quicker and get better and more fine fibre. Fact is: Everybody who breeds alpacas will also try to sell animals at some stage.
In the longterm, with more and more people joining the alpaca owner community and as one can see in the track-records other countries show us: Only Quality animals in all aspects will sustain and grow the market and will eventually lead to a fine fibre producing national herd in South Africa.
This is, after all, the goal for alpaca breeding: Beautiful soft garments made from our own fine alpaca fibre. The world markets are looking for it.

But SACOYO is not only Sales of Alpacas, SACOYO emphasizes on after sales support for the committed Alpaca investor, we want to level the ground and open doors for the benefit of EVERYONE  in the new industry. The more people are involved the better for each individual in the community. There are so many business opportunities still to be explored in and around the alpaca world from supply to services and from tourism to fibre processing and manufacturing of finished products.
We established the first dedicated SA Alpaca and Lama Quarantine Station in  Paarl near Cape Town which is available to anybody for imports and exports.
In November 2006 did we invite Maria to present the first
Alpaca Fashion Show in South Africa.
The first alpacas ever have been exported to Namibia and we have imported the first and only pure bread Suri Alpacas to South Africa.

Suri left - Huacaya rightSuri in front and 2 Huacayas in the backIf you think Alpacas as such are rare have a look at Suri Alpacas. They are the Champion’s League of alpaca breeding. Not even 10% of all alpacas in the world are Suri Alpacas. The big majority are called Huacaya Alpacas which grow their fibre like sheep in small fluffy waves. Suris grow the fibre in drooping dreadlocks and the scales on each hair are more smoothly aligned. This makes this exquisite fleece feel smooth like silk.
Our own breeding programme of Suris went so exceptionally well over the last 3 years that we are proud to offer the first South African born pure Suri Alpaca Offspring for sale. If you are looking for something not only producing outstanding value but also an irresistable attraction, please enquire.

Call us, Carmen or Udo for a personalized talk about your requirements, have a private Alpaca Course - and of course we love to offer you our wonderful healthy and colourful quality Alpacas from Quintessence and our very own beautiful offspring.
If you either
- want to go into serious alpaca breeding,
- would like to keep some interactive pets around the house or smallholding,
- practice alternative healing of  mentally compromized children with animals,
- need an attraction for a tourism venue or
- look for some Guardians for your herd of sheep or geese to keep the Rooikat and Jackals at bay (Even Prince Charles employes the services of four alpaca Herdguards to protect his 450 sheep against the foxes of Gloucestershire):
We have the alpacas for your requirement or find them for you.
So think about this - outstanding - sustainable - environment friendly and - renewable resource investment with an enchanting personality. It could change your life.

SACOYO Alpacas, South AfricaWelcome to SACOYO

and to our

Wonderful World of Alpacas

For centuries people in South America have been drawn to Alpacas for their superior fibre. In South Africa we are just beginning to see the growth potential in the Alpaca Industry.

While most people who invest in Alpacas fall into one of three groups most are attracted to raising these magnificent animals because they offer us the chance to escape the rat race of our hectic modern lifestyle:

The first group wants to increase all values in their lives: They try to live from breeding Alpacas while creating an environment where their families can grow up  and develop values and a work ethic. The second group of people keeping Alpacas have finished raising their own families and are ready to settle down. Sometimes to an early retirement with the goal of creating a continuous income from their investment being involved in animals who are a joy to share your lives with. Finally, there are those who decided strictly for the investment with no plan of ever becoming involved in the daily care of their Alpacas.
